Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has announced that the Department of Education plans to alter the handling of sexual assault cases on campus to make it harder and increase punishments for those who unjustly accuse another person of sexual assault. This will go along with a rescinding of Title IX protections that guide the enforcement of gender discrimination cases in higher education institutions.
DeVos has stated that Obama’s actions on this front were overreach that failed students across the board. Critics of her actions say this plan will deter victims of sexual assault from coming forward and incentivize more sexual assault on campus. Many students are also worried that this is an example of the government going back on civil rights protections. On the other hand, supporters see this action as giving the unjustly accused a platform.
