Kamala Harris, a Democratic senator from California, announced in a town hall meeting on Wednesday that she intends to co-sponsor and support Bernie Sanders’s healthcare bill. Sanders’s bill, “Medicaid for All,” installs a single-payer health insurance system that would replace the current Obamacare system; Obamacare includes both nonprofit and for-profit health insurance and is often criticized for being insufficient and inefficient. This is the first time has Harris publicly supported single-payer healthcare; Harris defended her decision by claiming that support of this new system is not only morally and ethically correct, but also fiscally practical. Many believe this is an important step to propel Sanders’s healthcare plan forward, since it is the first time single-payer healthcare appears to be politically viable.
