President Donald Trump is being widely criticized for his response to the disaster caused by Harvey in the past few days. Upon visiting Texas, Trump did not take the initiative to meet with any victims or near the disaster areas. Instead, for the three hours he was there, Trump gushed about the turnout of the crowd as he waved a Texas state flag. He also raved about the massive relief efforts that would be mounted, but did not specify how the White House intended to help.
Many have called this response disconnected and nonchalant in the face of suffering. However, reports from administration officials defend the president’s actions by stating that they did not want to disturb the recovery zones with the large entourage a presidential visit would require. Supporters of Trump also maintain that he has been very concerned about the crisis and is attempting to be as involved as possible.
